Kill Devil Hills , NC , United States

Kill Devil Hills received its municipal charter in 1953. Situated in the near geographic middle of the Northern Beaches, it is the largest municipality in Dare County with a year-round population of about 6,800 people. We are proud to be the site of the first heavier-than-air powered flight. A 12 second, 120-foot flight that launched the Age of Aviation on Thursday, December 17, 1903. Wilbur and Orville Wright were successful in making four flights at the base of the big hill that is now a part of the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

One of the most popular questions visitors ask is how the name Kill Devil Hills came about. Several versions of the story circulate on the Outer Banks. One legend suggests the pirates who once called these shores home are to blame. Apparently, one night while taking a "shore leave", a surly lot of buccaneers were sitting amongst the sand dunes that towered over the landscape, drinking moonshine that was "strong enough to kill the devil." Another version holds that in the 1700's William Byrd of Virginia, apparently no admirer of the Carolinas, wrote that "most of the rum they get in the country comes from New England, and is so bad and unwholesome that it is not improperly called "Kill Devil." Other lore suggests the town received its moniker from an old brand of rum that washed ashore at the dunes here, the only surviving cargo from a nameless shipwreck.

The Wright Brothers Memorial Shaft now sits atop the 90-foot tall "Big Kill Devil Hill" where the aforementioned legendary indulgences took place. Much of the Outer Banks was dominated by a chain of giant sand dunes, much like Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head to the south. The dune where the Wrights made history was once one of these slowly migrating giants, until the federal government acted to memorialize Orville and Wilbur's achievement here with a national park. By the time grass was planted to stabilize the dune in the 1920's, and the 60 foot granite monument erected way up top, "Big Kill Devil Hill" had moved several hundred feet south over time, a natural process of the prevailing winds.

Wright Brothers National Memorial is also home to First Flight Airstrip This 3,000-foot paved airstrip was added to the park in 1963 to accommodate small planes. Parking at the airstrip is limited tie down area is restricted to 24 consecutive hours or a total of 48 hours during any 30-day period. Pilots who wish to stay longer for other purposes may tie down at the Dare County Regional Airport, where gas and rental cars are available.

There are many places to eat, play and stay in Kill Devil Hills - from fast food to fine faire, fresh Seafood, Mexican, and Italian. You name it. There are many public beach accesses along Highway 12. Kill Devil Hills also offers a public bathhouse/lifeguard station with public restrooms located at the intersection of Virginia Dare Trail (Highway 12) and Ocean Bay Drive.

Life changing trip

Date of Stay:

The location was perfect. The area is beyond beautiful. The condo is incredible. I had the chance to take my 4 year old son for a boys weekend. We enjoyed every second staying here! The morning sun will greet you. You can hear the sounds of the ocean from the master suite. The shower/stream room will re-charge your mind. Drinking coffee and eating donuts (goto duck donuts) on the huge deck is a must. There are no words to express what a wonderful time we had!

Life changing trip

Date of Stay:

My wife and I hadn't been to the Outer Banks for many years and we wanted to visit again during the off season but when the weather was still nice. We have a small dog and we wanted to be able to take her. We searched different places and found Victoria Place. It's a beautifully decorated three bedroom condo with a large deck (partially covered). It has high end features throughout. It even has a pool table and home theatre with many movies to select from. It's on the 4th floor but there is an elevator and is fully accessible for those with mobility issues. When we arrived we met the owners (Tori and Rex as well as their dog Sal) who actually live in the condo right below this rental. Great people. We had a small problem when the cable TV didn't work right a way so I called Rex and he got the cable company out right away to fix the problem. There are many really great restaurants nearby as well as different activities (not including the beach itself obviously). We would recommend this rental.

We had a wonderful time in this condo. The weather was bad the whole time we were there, raining and windy but we had plenty of room and plenty to do in the condo. The condo is set up with everything you could possibly need. There is a huge selection of movies. The kitchen is fully stocked with pans, dishes, glasses, cooking utensils, etc. In the laundry room there is a high chair and a small extra fridge. The condo is huge and so beautifully decorated. The game room was super for movies or playing pool. There was also a poker table and accessories. The bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable and I slept as well as I do at home and I have a wonderful bed at home that I hate to leave. The Jacuzzi was very relaxing and the steam shower was a joy to use each day. The condo is very quiet and has nice views of the ocean and Wright's Memorial. The day we left the sun came out and was beautiful shining through all the windows. All the appliances were top notch. It was nice to be able to wash our clothes and take them home clean and not dirty. The balcony is massive with plenty of Adirondack chairs and a hammock. I am only sorry we could not spend more time out there due to the weather. It is located close to Nags Head. There are plenty of stores close by for shopping (I highly recommend visiting the "Cotton Gin" at one of its 3 locations) and nice chain grocery stores as well. We enjoyed the condo so much that we went to Fresh Market every night and brought back a nice cooked meal and spent as much time in the condo as we could. The walk to the beach is very short and one of the entrances has a nice wooden ramp and steps that lead up to a look out. The area is very nice and safe. We met the owners while we were there and they were very nice and accommodating. Our toy poodle loved his stay in the condo as well. He enjoyed riding the elevator. Everything was immaculate. We will definitely be returning soon. We normally vacation in Myrtle Beach but this was our first time in Nags Head and liked it just as well and had much less drive time. I spent hours and hours searching the internet for possible places to stay and I am so glad we chose here. It was everything it said it was and so much more. The pictures do not lie.

Stayed once, already planning my next two stays this year!!!

Date of Stay:

One of the best vacation rentals I have ever stayed at!!! Very affordable for the luxurious accommodations! To sum it up: Great for a couples, family vacations, military meet up vacation spot :) , girls weekend, guys weekend, pet-friendly, foodies like that like hole in the wall dives or gourmet restaurants, historical tours, fun in sun/sand...the list could go on forever! The absolute BEST part of this rental is Tori and Rex. They would help with anything above and beyond what should be expected of them. For instance, they ran me up (they live below the penthouse) laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent so I didn't have to go tot he store, Rex came and started the super awesome gas (fake wood) burner on a cool day, suggested where to eat depending on our food mood that day, and suggested places to explore.

Great getaway!

Date of Stay:

We spent a pre-Thanksiving getaway with our 5 kiddos at Victoria Place. The accommodations were top notch. We planned to do a lot of sightseeing with the kids but it rained and rained and rained. The movie room along with the spacious well equipped accommodations kept the vacation from being a total washout! It was awesome in the rain so I can only imagine in beautiful beach weather! Definitely would return to this gem!
